Treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Alternative Methods

Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be a very painful and embarrassing condition that forces a lot of people to live a life of quiet desperation. The diarrhea and/or constipation that accompanies IBS can cause a person to be afraid to leave their home, while the pain and cramping can keep a person in bed for hours, if not days. The truth is that many times, doctors are just as baffled by conditions like IBS as we are, so medicines may not always be the best option. To help you avoid taking medicines unless they are absolutely necessary, we’d like to talk about some alternative treatments that you can use for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

The first thing to try is something to help you deal with stress and anxiety, such as meditation. Meditation has been shown to help some people lower stress in their lives, or at least be able to deal with it more effectively. As a result, symptoms of IBS often disappear or at least get reduced to a level that is manageable. Since IBS is considered a psychosomatic condition, treating both the mind and body are important. If you don’t have any abnormal stress or anxiety issues, then maybe there is something in your diet that is causing your IBS flare-ups.

You should also try changing your diet by avoiding spicy foods, dairy products, and increasing your fiber intake. Although this doesn’t always do the trick, studies suggest that people with low fiber intake are often more affected by IBS than those with a high or average fiber intake. Lactose is also a culprit that tends to disagree with the digestive system of certain people, so it might be as simple as avoiding dairy products. You might also try avoiding meat products, as some people have allergic or symptomatic reactions to certain meats.

Some other things you might consider, are probiotics, which are a natural product that you can find both on the internet and at your local health food store. Try visiting your local health food store to see if they have any homeopathic remedies or herbs that have worked for others. As embarrassing as it can be to talk about it, you should realize that it is not an uncommon situation.

Some people have found success with hypnosis for IBS symptoms, while others have found psychotherapy to be beneficial. You could also try stress-management classes if you are having a problem dealing with added stress in your life.

There are a variety of ways to treat IBS that don’t involve prescription medicines. If you are uncomfortable talking to your doctor about IBS, or if you haven’t found any success with normal treatments, then something listed here might work for you. The key is to keep trying different remedies, one at a time, until you find something that works for you. Once you find it, talk to your doctor about it to see if they have some ways to increase the effect of your treatment. Regardless of what you try, the key is to not give up, you will find something that works.
