Is there any concrete research that these cultured dairy drinks are useful to human health? Are supplements from a health food store just as effective? Can some probiotic supplements be harmful to anyone?

I am already eating yogurt and taking a probiotic supplement. Was just wondering if there are other good sources of probiotics out there?
Also, I want to try making my own kimchi. I’m not sure where to buy napa cabbage, though. Can I possibly get it at a regular grocery store?

Yeah. Thats also why things in the freezer don’t stay good indefinately. Bacteria have to get realllllllllly cold to die from it. They still reproduce like normal, but they do it realllllly slow. So thats why they call refridgerators and freezers bacteriostatic (keeping the bacteria from multiplying so quickly) mechanisms and not bacteriacidal (auctually killing them).
So on a side note, clean out your freezer and don’t eat that chicken from two years ago…

They would add these prior to the culturing process to get the yogurt curds to form. However, if the yogurt is then pasteurised this would remove any beneficial [probiotic] bacteria. So unless the yogurt says ‘live yogurt’ I don’t think it is a reliable source of probiotics…unless the label specifically says so in some other way other than saying ‘live yogurt’ [check labels]. However, soya in itself apparently contains natural probiotic sugars known as stachyose and raffinose that should provide some benefit.

But perhaps go easy on soya products if you have any issues with your thyroid gland as soya is believed to contain goitrogens. These are compounds that may inhibit the activity of the thyroid gland. However, eating iodine rich foods such as seaweed, or taking a multivit/minerals supplement containing iodine or using iodised salt, might help counteract this.

Best wishes.
