Question by Strifelok: can probiotics cure yeast infection?

Best answer:

Answer by Matt
Potentially, I’m not a doctor but in theory they can. Probiotics introduces more competition in the intestinal tract which takes away from other microbes being more prominent. Note though that this solution takes a lot of time and will not always be successful.

An anti-fungal would be speedier although they’re not the best for your body.

Question by B B: Has anyone had a dog with a yeast infection? Natural alternatives?
The vet said today that the dog maybe has a UTI which caused itching in her vagina and to put cortisone around her vagina. He said it could possibly be yeast too but doubtful. She seems sore down there in general, her anus and vagina seem sore. I feel uncomfortable rubbing cortisone on her since she’s sore, and am concerned it’s actually yeast. She has a prescription for UTI too. Should I try treating potential yeast with probiotics or yogurt?

My pup had one once, she did get an antibiotic-the UTI medication will probably help her anyway with it, but my vet said to give the dog some yogurt-like in humans…most of the problem is the pup’s continuous licking causing the soreness.

Question by John 555: Probiotics and Yeast?
Ok so, according to this video I saw in youtube, yeast must be
in balance with acidophilus (probiotic). These two, co-exist in order
for our system to work correctly. If there is a lack of acidophilus
in our system yeast takes over, and causes yeast infection, this
ussually happens when taking antibiotics, if that acidophilus (probiotic)
is not replenished, because antibiotics kill good bacteria, and bad bacteria,
yeast is a fungus. What ultimately happens if theres TOO much acidophilus
in the human system, and little yeast? Any specific infection of that type?

Best answer:

Answer by Weise Ente
That video is nonsense.

That’s not how your normal microbiota function as an ecosystem. Besides being insanely simplistic, that’s not how yeast infections are caused. Actual yeast infections occur when Candida albicans gets somewhere it’s no supposed to be.

All Lactobacilli in the intestine are harmless. They also aren’t actually that numerous. The actual major constituents for your normal flora “good bacteria” are Bacteriodes and Clostridia.

Edit: Note that the antiscientific alties don’t like it when an actual expert blows apart their beliefs.

Question by mimi: is biotin good for your skin? will taking a biotin pill help prevent frequent yeast infections?
just doing some research and wondering. i already take 3 different kinds of probiotics (incluidng acidsolpholis and rephresh pro-b), garlic capsules, a multi vitamin, cranberry extract pills, azo yeast pills, and oil of oregano.

1st question: Yes. Like most vitamins on the market the daily required amount you should take is relatively low and should be taken in measurements of at least 1,000mcg a day to really see the effects it will have on your skin. You don’t have to worry about taking too much biotin and becoming toxic because biotin is a water soluble vitamin and any excess of the biotin can be safely passed out from our body much like salad. I take biotin myself and it does help your skin.

2nd question: I have not heard of any benefits of biotin preventing yeast infections, however biotin is naturally produced in our colons from the good bacteria that lives there. It seems you are taking quite a few of very good supplements that produce the good bacteria in your digestive system thus naturally producing biotin in your body.

Question by Sofi: How to prevent yeast infection while on antibiotics?
I am currently taking antibiotics due to respiratory infection.
[3 capsules a day during 7 days] < are there any chances at all in this period of time something will happened? such as infection or and threat to my health at all? >
What are some foods that contain probiotics?
and does buttermilk or peanut butter contains probiotics?
what can i do to avoid any infections during taking antibiotics?
i need as much information as possible.

Best answer:

Answer by Merry
Peanut butter doesn’t contain probiotics unless they’ve been added (and then it would say on the label that they’re an additive). I’m not certain about buttermilk. Any yogurt that says it has live cultures will contain probiotics.

You don’t automatically get a yeast infection just because you’re on antibiotics. But, if that has been an issue in the past for you, your doctor might prescribe probiotic capsules to take along with the antibiotics.
