I’ve read that colonic irrigation can help with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I’ve also read that it can do more harm than good. I’m keen to try it if it will help.

Has anyone with IBS tried it, and what was your experience? Did it benefit you in the long run?

I have bad IBS, I have never had colonic irrigation but i did recently have a colonoscopy. My stomach, small intestines and bowel need to be emptied and cleaned out (was done with a special drink preparation)

Afterwards i had bad constipation for about a week and bad stomach cramps (which were worser then before i had the procedure). During the procedure, air in blown into your bowel so you are bloated and gasy afterwards.

But thats a different procedure. It may help, i suppose you could give it a try. But i would never do it, just in case that happens again.

To treat my IBS i have 2 glasses of metamucil a day, drink 2 litres of water and take probiotic tablets. It really has helped me.

As a pharmacists with IBS, I can tell you that fiber is the most important thing to look at. It can correct the constipating kind AND diarrhea kind of IBS. Stay away from cheese and laxatives(except for bulk fiber laxatives, such as Metamucil, Citrucel, Benefiber, and Fibercon)

If considering medications, you have to know which form of IBS she has. There are new medications for the constipating kind, such as Zelnorm and Lotronex(not recommended), as well as very old medications for the diarrhea kind of IBS, such as dicyclomine, Immodium, and about 20 other medications.

I have read some on it and they make is sound so good.

I’m not very good at taking daily vitamin’s but i will take more of an effort if i know its going to work.
I always start off good and have good intentions in having a daily regiment but then i get lazy.
I need that shove

I’ve tried pro-biotics but, like you, don’t always finish the bottle. I start out but you have to take them on an empty stomach, blah-blah-blah.

I try to take at least SOME pro-biotics after I am on antibiotics for a sinus infection or whatever. I recommend some stuff called PRIMAL DEFENSE.

Our digestive systems need a balance of good bacteria and fungi for proper health. Usually, we start to get these microorgaisms at birth (from the birth canal, so babies born by Caesarian miss out a bit). We also get them from certain fermented products such as yoghurt (natural yoghurt that is), sauerkraut, miso.

The reason they are important is that the microorganisms are responsible for producing some of our vitamins (eg vitamin K), and for a small part of our digestion. They also keep other (pathogenic) microorganisms in check, and play a role in healthy elimination (often people low on healthy microorganisms are constipated or have diarrhoea).

Stress and poor diet can kill the healthy bowel flora (microorganisms), and cause an imbalance. The healthy bowel flora like a diet high in fibre – fruit, veg, nuts and good cereal (not breakfast cereal – rice, barley, millet, wheat, psyllium)

If you are healthy, and live a relatively healthy lifestyle, with a good diet, you should not need to take probiotics. You will need them if you have taken antibiotics, which are a bit indiscriminate and kill the good bugs too.

I agree there is a lot of hype about probiotics, but they do have their place. There is also a lot of hype about the amount you need. Good quality yoghurt will be sufficient in many cases. After all, provided you are eating healthy food to feed the good bugs, the smallish amount that makes it to your intestines will grow there.

One of the most important things for digestive health is to make sure your stomach is working well. If it is then the rest of the digestive system tends to work better too. For stomach health, eat bitter foods before meals (grapefruit, rocket, endive), don’t drink with meals, and don’t eat if not hungry. Relax when eating – don’t eat on the run.

Cigarettes. They relax the bowel, and make you at least 30% cooler.

Seriously, they really can help, though the obvious harmful side effects make them a tough choice to make.
