Question by WordNerd: Any suggestions on how to treat IBS?
I have severe IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). So severe that my doctor recommends that I take a laxative every single day. I really don’t like doing this and I fear that my body will get used to it, and then it won’t help anymore. Has anyone treated this with eating certain foods, or another natural remedy? Thanks bunches!

I feel your pain, I too have severe IBS, but i have the extreme opposite effect. I have the chronic diarrhea. to the point i have incontinence. I have altered my diet, which honestly doesn’t help. If i drink water it gives me the “runs”. I take so much medication for it, and nothing helps. I have found certain foods that do make it alot worse, but honestly nothing helps me. I wish you luck because i know first hand how hard it is.

Question by momof2kiddos: Does anyone know how to treat IBS effectively?
My husband has Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). We never know what is going to trigger an episode. By epsode I mean abdominal cramps, and some heinous diarrhea. It hits within moments of eating. If he eats something one night and has no episode, we never know if two weeks later eating the exact same thing will send his system into fits of IBS. So there are no foods that we know to avoid. Heck, eating some nutter-butter crackers set him off tonight! Some evenings we can’t even leave the house because a toilet has to be nearby.
It seems to be a mystery condition. His General Practitioner gave him some medicine to ’stop colon spasms’, thinking that would help, but it has done nothing beneficial at all. I’m thinking we need to take him to a Gastrointerologist. But from what I’ve heard, there is just no cure.

Does anyone else out there have this, or lives with someone who has it. If so, what on earth can be done? It is miserable.

Zelnorm has helped some people. This disease is difficult to control. Even a cold environment can trigger an attack. Ask for a consult for a gastroenterologist. They may have more information on the latest research. I hope he can get better control over his attacks. Good luck and don’t give up.

Question by Susie: what bowel disorder does my mom have (she’s lost over 40 pounds)? how to treat it?
my mum was always pleasantly plump and adorable. around 145 ish in weight and in her early 40s. she’s a wonderful Persian cook and she loved eating just as much as the next guy. but following years of turmoil at home, and years of trying to get my 18 year old brother on his feet (he dropped out of school, then college, quit like 10 jobs, moved cross country, moved back) and fighting with my dad, then eventually a bunch of events leading up to divorce from my dad, my mom developed an intestinal(?) disorder. anything she eats goes right through her, she’s full after like 3 bites of anything, and spends at least an hour in the bathroom every night getting rid of whatever she ate that day. she’s around 100 pounds now and aside from this really worrying me, I also really miss the look of my pleasantly plump mum.

so does this sound familiar? anyone know what this is or how to treat it? we guessed irritable bowel syndrome. but it didn’t really fit all her symptoms.

oh and this massive weight loss took place over the course of 4 months id say.

Question by jonny fix-it: how do i treat chronic oral thrush?
I’ve tried probiotics. Clotrimazole tablets (prescribed by the doctor), and even tried heavily restrictive dieting (restricting myself from carbs and sugars of any kind). The doctor has taken blood work, and said that he sees no sign of immune diseases. I do not have diabetes or family history of diabetes.

The doctor just shrugs about it, and orders me more oral medication… The drugs and the dieting help, but they are very inconvenient and temporary solutions.

How do I get this Candida (the yeast that causes thrush) back under control, so it balances itself out?

Basically the reason you have a yeast infection is because there’s an imbalance in your body. A healthy person has a balance between the yeast in their body and the good bacteria in their body.

Too much yeast, you have a yeast infection. Too much bacteria, you have a bacterial infection.

So, when you have a yeast infection you essentially have too much yeast in your body relative to the good bacteria. The natural way to treat it and bring back that balance is to starve the yeast and introduce more good bacteria into your body.

Oh and BTW – That’s why you often get relief from using the over the counter meds temporarily, and then the yeast infection comes back. The creams aren’t changing the source of the problem. They are just killing the yeast they come in contact with, and not balancing the yeast/bacteria in your body and actually sometimes end up making things a lot worse.

Oh BTW2 – That’s also why many times you’ll get a yeast infection after using antibiotics. Antibiotics kill all the bacteria in your body, the good and the bad. When that happens the balance between the yeast and good bacteria is off, and once again and you get a yeast infection.

Things you can add to your diet (to help promote good bacteria) are live yogurt cultures (or take Acidophilus), plenty of water, fresh vegetables, lots of protein rich foods, whey protein, raw garlic, nuts, seeds, oils, millet, rice and oat brans

Things you should remove from your diet (to starve the yeast) are all sodas, sugars, fruit, fermented foods, foods containing white flour, alcohol (especially beer), antacids and any product that has yeast or mold

Changing your diet will definitely get you on the road to balancing the yeast and good bacteria, but what I would also recommend is to use a homeopathic solution to help naturally speed up the process.

I always feel if there’s a natural way to do something, then it’s best to avoid the chemicals. I would look for an natural product, that can be taken orally to promote re-growth of the good bacteria in your body.

There are a few out there, I think they are probably all pretty good. One that I have used and was very effective for me was is yeastrol.
Best of Luck!

Hope this helps and best of luck! :)

Question by jimmy_tst: Have you read that lady’s fingers and barley could be used to treat diabetes?
I posted this question yesterday, and it got reported this morning for violation. I don’t know why anyone would report something that might be life saving. Anyway, here’s posting the question again with the information.

I received an email from a friend with the following information. If you are diabetic or if you have friends who are diabetic, perhaps you could consider the following information? The recommendation isn’t meant to replace insulin treatment – rather it is to complement the existing treatment – I suppose there is no harm trying the recommended treatment, since lady’s fingers and barley are natural, healthy vegetables and grains. :)

+++

“Please note that another name for Lady Finger (Bhindi ) is ” OKURA “. Last month in one of TV program I learnt of a treatment of Sugar (Diabetes). Since I am diabetic, I tried it and it was very useful and my Sugar is in control now. In fact I have already reduced my medicine. Take two pieces of Lady Finger (Bhindi) and remove/cut both ends of each piece. Also put a small cut in the middle and put these two pieces in glass of water. Cover the glass and keep it at room temperature during night. Early morning, before breakfast simply remove two pieces of lady finger (bhindi) from the glass and drink that water. Keep doing it on daily basis. Within two weeks, you will see remarkable results in reduction of your SUGAR. My sister has got rid of her diabetes. She was on Insulin for a few years, but after taking the lady fingers every morning for a few months, she has stopped Insulin but continues to take the lady fingers every day. But she chops the lady fingers into fine pieces in the night, adds the water and drinks it all up the next morning. Please. try it as it will not do you any harm even if it does not do much good to you, but U have to keep taking it for a few months before U see results, as most cases might be chronic.”

—–

“Diabetics should eat more barley as the fibre will prevent blood sugar levels from rising too high. It also provides relief from constipation or diarrhoea for those suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome.”
I am not sure how much scientific support and research have been done on this recommended treatment. I suppose you could google “lady’s fingers”, “barley” and “diabetes”. It is up to your discretion on whether you want to implement this treatment, and how best to implement it.
I guess some westerners may not know the asian natural methods of healing and health. They have no concept of heatiness and cooling effects that food can give, though it’s a generally known fact amongst asians. Lady’s fingers are common in asia, especially in third world countries, though I think many supermarkets in USA should sell them.
Thanks for your faith-filled words, bro gj3. Thanks for your kind words too, sis Tallulah. I received the testimony from a friend’s email, so I thought it’s encouraging to share with people here. I think complementary medicine sounds great – I agree with your doctor’s advice.
