Question by da_goat887: So is there any health insurance for those with serious medical conditons?
My younger brother who’s only 20 years old has a host of serious illnesses: crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, and a few more conditions that has constantly kept him sick for a good portion of his childhood. He’s missed at least half a school year on a number of occasions, and despite his maturation he’s still heavily affected by his conditions.

Obviously, it’s practically impossible for him to hold a steady job, he’ll work for a while and then he’ll have to take off a month or two just to deal with his illness, with that said he surely won’t have employee health insurance. Currently, he’s using our state’s medicaid, however once he turns 21 he’s no longer eligible for medicaid. With the health care system being the way that it is, is there any possibility that he could continue receiving health care despite his ineligibility? He takes a ton of drugs daily, and even takes some of the same medications that our grandparents take lol.

I know some of you heartless conservatives believe he should provide his own health coverage, but how? His drugs cost thousands, and he’s in the ER constantly, thus making his health-care only affordable to extremely rich individuals. When healthy, he does contribute as much as he possibly can, however for someone in his condition it would be downright shameful if he can’t continue to receive any healthcare.

Question by Em: Fungal infections on multiple parts of my body…is there an underlying problem?
I have always had manageable cases of yellow tongue and dandruff. My father has the same. Now my vagina is cracking and itching, and it may be a fungal infection.
My Biology teacher said that a lot of people get dandruff because they wash away the probiotics that should be living on their scalp. Is my whole body deficient in probiotics?
What can I do?
I take a daily shower and have good oral hygiene…*eye roll*

Question by CJ81: Is there a link between bipolar, IBS and RLS?
I have been diagnosed with bipolar II (1 year), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (4 years) and self diagnosed Restless Leg Syndrome (15 years).

I am a 28 yr old male, could there be a link in the illnesses? I read articles of links between 2 of the 3 but wasn’t sure if anyone else out there had experience of all 3?

Best answer:

Answer by Shawn King
Yes… There easily could be.

There was a time I had around 30 different symptoms. I was able to overcome them all by applying a few Wellness Principals.

I wouldn’t be so concerned with finding the link between the 3 as I would in learning and applying basic Wellness Formulas to my life. Especially since something like Heavy Metal toxicity can cause over 30 different symptoms. Parasites can cause almost just as many. That’s not even getting into nutritional deficiencies.

Question by wonder.bread11: Is there a web site that would give a menu for 7 days (for my grandchildren’s visit.?
I’m sure there are organizations who feed meals 3 times a day. It would be so much easier to just copy a week’s menu from something like that. My grandson already has Irritable Bowel Syndrome. They eat lots of sugar – I want to try and get as many fruits and vegetables into them while they’re here. My grandson is 11 and eats an unbelievable amount of food although he’s not heavy. Any suggestions – or websites? Thank you!!

Answer by Amy
I encourage you to stick as much as possible to the kinds of things they like to eat while trying to sneak in as many fruits and veggies as possible and cut out the sugar. You can probably make healthier versions of whatever they like. I have a few suggestions. You can’t completely change their diet in 7 days. My grandma thought I was spoiled so whenever she got the chance she would try to discipline me the way she thought I should be. It only made me terrified of my grandma.

Healthy Spaghetti and Meatballs
2 12-ounce to 14-ounce jars of your favorite marinara sauce
2 slices of your favorite sandwich bread
3/4 cup water
1/2 pound ground hamburger 93% lean
1/2 pound ground turkey
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving
1 large egg
1/2 small onion, finely minced
1 Tbls parsley
1 tsp basil
1 tsp oregano
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
8 ounces whole-wheat spaghetti

1. Heat marinara sauce in a large, wide pot over medium heat. Cover to prevent splattering.

2. Remove crusts from bread, place bread in a medium bowl and pour water over. Let sit 10 minutes, and gently squeeze out excess liquid. Put bread in a large bowl; discard water.

3. Add the ground meats, cheese, egg, onion, parsley, basil, oregano, and red pepper flakes to bowl with bread. Gently toss to combine, maintaining a light touch to keep air in the meatballs (don’t squish the meat too much, or you’ll end up with tough meatballs). Roll the meat mixture in your hands to create meatballs slightly larger than a golf ball.

4. Remove marinara sauce from heat to prevent splattering, and gently drop the meatballs in the warm sauce. Return tomato sauce to medium-low heat, bring to a simmer and cook, covered, until meatballs have cooked through, about 30 minutes.

5. Cook pasta according to package directions, toss with marinara sauce and top with meatballs.

Chicken Pot Pie – We love this one. It doesn’t take any time to throw together and it’s delicious. Be sure to read the note at the end or the crust may not turn out well.
2 cps cooked chicken chunks – I usually use chicken leftover from a previous meal
¾ cp frozen corn
½ can green beans
¾ cp frozen sliced carrots
¼ cp frozen peas
1 jar Heinz Chicken Gravy

1 ¾ cp Bisquick
1 egg
2/3 cp milk

Preheat the oven to 375*

In a med bowl stir together the chicken chunks, corn, green beans, carrots and gravy. Set aside. 2 ½ cps of any fresh, canned or frozen veggies can be used.

In another bowl mix the Bisquick with the egg and milk. Stirring just till blended.

Spray a deep dish pie pan with cooking spray. (It can also be cooked in 4 smaller single serving dishes, 10-12 oz size) Spoon the chicken gravy mixture into the prepared pan. Spoon the Bisquick mixture over the filling.

IMPORTANT DO NOT try to put the top crust it in the middle and spread it out. It will be too thick in the middle to cook through. You must put spoonfuls around the edges, maybe an inch or so apart and then a spoonful or two in the middle. Spread it out as evenly as possible. Bake 25 min or until the crust is golden brown.

Oven Chicken Nuggets – these are way better than fast food nuggets or store bought frozen ones
2 skinless boneless chicken breasts
1 ½ cps Sour Cream and Chive Potato Chips, crushed
1 cp Ranch dressing

Preheat oven to 350*. Trim chicken breasts of all fat and cut into chunks. Put the Ranch dressing in a baggie, add the chicken chunks – seal and make sure the chicken is covered in dressing. Let it marinade for 10 min, turn over for another 10 min,

Put the chips in a baggie and smash as fine as you like. Remove the chicken from the dressing and toss it in with the chips. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.

Remove the chicken from the chips and place the chicken chunks on the baking sheet. Bake 20-25 min or until chicken is done through.

Oven Fries – I love fries and these are much healthier than those from your favorite fast food place but just as delicious – better than some.

2 med baking potatoes (great with yams also)
½ tablespoon olive oil
1 pinch white sugar – helps with browning
1 pinch ground cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon Salad Supreme

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil, and coat well with cooking spray. Scrub potatoes well, peel or not as you like and cut into 1/2 inch thick fries. Place cut fries in a lrg bowl.

Sprinkle with the olive oil, sugar and seasonings, toss to coat all fries evenly. Spread on baking sheet in one layer.

After 20 minutes, remove from oven and turn fries with a pancake turner. This will help them brown evenly and keep them from sticking. Bake another 10 minutes, until potatoes are tender and browned. Serve immediately.

Question by Jamie: Prozac’s size effects are really bothering me. Is there another antidepressant I might tolerate better?
I’m on fluoxetine (the generic name for Prozac) for dysthymia with occasional episodes of major depression, various phobias, and irritable bowel syndrome. I’ve been taking 10mg a day for three weeks, and even at that low dose, the side effects are quite bothersome. I haven’t been able to have a complete bowel movement without the use of a laxative for two weeks. I have a history of constipation (mostly in childhood), but I haven’t had anything this bad for years, and since my digestive problems when I went on this medicine were the exact opposite of what I’m experiencing now (constant, and I mean CONSTANT diarrhea), I’m fairly sure that this is the drug’s fault. I also get nauseous often, but I haven’t actually vomited since I started the drug.

The medicine also makes me very drowsy, and I’ve been sleeping a lot more and a lot more deeply than I usually do. Before I went on fluoxetine, I was sleeping 3-5 hours a night, with no naps during the day. Now, I average on about 10 hours of sleep a night with a 2 hour nap in the afternoon, and I still feel exhausted. I also fall asleep at random times. I’ve fallen asleep watching TV, eating, on the computer, on the bathroom floor after taking a shower, even in the middle of a conversation. Also, I sleep so soundly that it’s pretty likely that I could sleep soundly through a bomb going off on my street. This past week, I have slept through three alarms almost every day: one on my clock radio, a timer on my TV in case I sleep through the clock radio, and an alarm on my cell phone to remind me to take my medication (because of this, I’ve taken a couple of doses late). To make sure that I woke up on time this morning, I asked one of my friends to come over and wake me up. He tells me that he came into my room and shook me while I was asleep, and even though I stayed in bed with my head under the covers, I had a conversation with him and he assumed that I was awake. I have absolutely no memory of this. In fact, I slept in three hours later than I intended to, despite setting three alarms and having someone “wake me up”.

I’ve also been having frequent nosebleeds. I’m not sure if this is related to the medication or to the cold weather, but starting this past week, I had a nosebleed nearly every other day, and on Friday, I had three separate nosebleeds. I remember reading that SSRIs can cause bleeding problems, so I’m a little concerned about this. I also feel a bit jittery; I’m constantly fidgeting, itching myself, and biting my nails, something that’s never really been a problem before. I’ve also had more of an appetite, but, paradoxically, I’ve lost five pounds since starting the medication.

It may be a bit early yet, but I haven’t noticed any change in mood at all, and these side effects are really annoying me, the constipation being the worst. I’m seeing my shrink tomorrow, and I’m wondering if I should tell her that I want to go off the medication or if I should ust wait and see if these side effects go away. I know that SSRIs generally have the fewest side effects, but do all SSRIs have the same side effects? Could going on a different SSRI get rid of the constipation and sleep problems? Is there another class of antidepressants that has less digestive side effects? I realize that I’m probably going to have side effects with any drug, but there are plenty that I can tolerate, like sexual side effects (totally celibate), weird dreams or nightmares (I’ve had those my whole life; I doubt I’d even notice if I experienced this side effect), or weight gain (I’m skinny anyway, so I could stand to gain a few pounds).

Sorry this is so long, and thanks in advance.
