Question by Deb S (SFECU) pray4revival: HELP!! How do I get rid of thrush? I have had these sores in my mouth since February?
The Dr. has finally after many apts. figured out that it is thrush and I have taken diflucan once. Dr. wants me to take that for 5 more weeks. Plus Nystatin, probiotics, acidopholis. Other things I wonder if they are related: I am so thirsty and my hair has become so dry. My blood sugar was checked, it’s fine. I do not have HIV. Three years ago I had a growth on my parathyroid gland and had that removed. I am almost afraid that it’s that again. Any ideas?
I have not been on any antibiotics. And this thrush is in my mouth not anywhere else. Also the Parathyroid glands are totally different from the thyroid.
Oh, yes, tried the Benadryl, Maalox combination. It never did a thing for me. And I do not use an inhaler.

How to Get Rid of Thrush
Thrush is caused by an overgrowth of Candida Albicans and while it is not a serious condition, it can cause a lot of discomfort. As well as seeking help from your doctor and treating yourself with over the counter medicines, there are many things you can do to help yourself at home.
Steps:
Keep the affected area clean by washing with plain water. Avoid using soaps, shower and bath gels and deodorants.
Avoid using spermicidal creams, lubricants and latex condoms if suffering from vaginal thrush.
Wear natural fibres and keep affected areas as cool, clean and dry as possible.
Drink Cranberry juice.
Avoid stressful situations as stress is often a trigger for thrush.
Treat both yourself and any sexual partner you may have to avoid reinfection.
Treat persistent thrush with external application of Melaleuca Oil.
Remove, treat or avoid possible causes of thrush (where sensible): oral contraceptives, broad spectrum antibiotics, iron deficiency; anaemia, diabetes, steroid therapy, high sugar diet, alcohol.
Apply Aloe Vera gel to the affected area.
Apply natural yogurt to the affected area.
Avoid dairy foods, food and drink containing yeast, dried fruit, mushrooms, monosodium glutamate, pickles and smoked meat and fish. These have all been shown to be possible triggers for thrush.
Tips:
Thrush may be a sign of a wider overgrowth of Candida so following a restricted diet as per number 10 for at least one month may be advisable.
Consider using acidophilus supplements to support friendly bacteria in the gut.
Warnings:
While self treating is possible do not ignore persistent thrush. Seek the advice of your doctor if the symptoms do not clear within days of self treating as there may be something further amiss.

I dont know if this will help. but try taking 1000mg of Vitamin C everyday. I know it boosts your immune system.It sounds like it could be a Thyroid problem,I am not a Dr. that is just a thought.

Question by ideoRama81: What are some foods I can eat since I was diagnosed with IBS?
I had undergone extreme family stress and hardship within the past year.

At my doctor’s physical, he stated that I am in good health except for 3 things: I gained 30Lbs since November, I was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), & I have high cholesterol. I am 27 now and am in need of advice.

I am on meds for a 4th, non related, disability that causes weight gain, but the side effects keep me from doing physical activity on a frequent basis.

A nutritionist is not currently within my budget (since some cost up to $ 100 a session) and the gym trainers are a rip off.

Since I can’t work out, I wanna cut back on my unhealthy diet & eating out a lot.

Does anyone know what I can order or buy at the store that is good for IBS or to cut down on calories, seeing as I am unable to cook by myself due to all 4 medical conditions?

I gave the background info, but really need a lot of advice to keep the weight down in the diet area.

Anyone who knw’s nutrition ideas plz answer.
I forgot to mention, my medical disability is Neurological, which is why I don’t trust my gas stove, boiling water, or sharp/heavy objects. I live on my own tho, but just eat out a lot cuz that’s all I seem to be able to do. Ironically, I am Italian and great chef, but I can’t put it to use very often.
Also, I lost weight on Nutrisystem last year, but it was seemingly a “quick fix” and it came right back on, even when I wrote down a daily calorie intake (after I stopped). I am 6 feet tall and weight 234Lbs. Strangely, I hold my weight well since people think I weigh around 180 or so. I was an athlete for years, so I guess my core is muscle. I wanna lose around 30 Lbs all together.

Do a Google search on IBS books, then follow the diet suggestions. There are some amazing (and encouraging) books out there by people who had this themselves!!

Question by trace: Having stomach problems since going from a low carb to a high carb diet?
I’ve had stomach problems off and on for a little over a year…I started taking probiotics, and they seem to help…I started a low carb diet awhile back to take a few pounds off, my stomach problems went away…I cheated one weekend, they came back…I stayed on my low carb diet, but recently went off because of lack of choices of food to eat…my stomach problems are back in full force…what is causing my problems…sugar, flour/wheat??

That’s quite possible that you have a food allergy. I’d suggest you go back to low carb and slowly go through the reintroduction of carbs to identify what specifically is your problem.

During the first 2 weeks, you can have several cups of salads. Jicama, cucumber, celery & radish marinated in sesame oil & hot pepper flakes with rice wine vinegar & artificial sweetener. Make a stir fry with Bok Choy, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, celery, mushrooms, shirataki noodles & your fav meats. I love eggs and could eat deviled eggs every day. You can smother omelets & meats with mushrooms & peppers & cheese. Meatzza – Meatloaf with pizza toppings (pepperoni, mushrooms, peppers, mozzarella) I prefer very thin sausage patties fried crispy with pizza toppings. Pork rinds & celery sticks are great crunch and can be eaten with dips (avocado/mayo/cayenne is my fav) & tuna/chicken/turkey/egg salads. I love love love my rotisserie and it makes the meats extra tasty. I cook a turkey every couple of months and make soup with the bones (add vinegar to leach minerals) and turkey salads. I’ll cube up some turkey meat mix in a couple of raw eggs add cheese (and broccoli after induction) with cayenne powder & nuke a couple of minutes for nearly instant meal. Flax seed should be eaten 2T daily even in induction.

Ground flax seed (2-3 Tbsp) 1/4 cup of water, cinnamon, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg – let sit 10 min to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle and nuke for 1.5 min. for hot cereal or 2 min. for more of a muffin type thing. Great low carb, high fiber treat.

After the 2 week induction, you add 5 grams of carbs per day every week and add a much greater variety of non starchy vegetables. Change your mindset – eat what you like to eat, just adapt it to low carb -
replace bread with lettuce
replace pasta with cabbage
replace rice with cauliflower
replace potatoes with brocolli
I eat all my favorite Chinese, Italian, even Mexican foods with low carb foods. Cabbage makes an excellent pasta substitute (for me) Make a lasagna with blanched cabbage leaves & thinly fried eggplant instead of noodles. Sugar free pasta sauce over fried cabbage. My fav is chicken cacciatore, I add greens & flaxseed or chia seed for body and also add pizza toppings – pepperoni, mushrooms, lots of mozzarrella. Alfredo sauce is also low carb.

I don’t cook often. I usually make huge batches of food & freeze most of it. I cook meats 20-30# at a time (for just me) I have gone into the forums for recipes (especially when I first started low carb) I was shocked that fried “rice” made with grated cauliflower tasted just like it’s name sake. Shirataki noodles are traditional in Japanese sukiyaki and low carb. I’ve heard faux mashed “taters” made with cauliflower & cream cheese can fool non low carbers. “potato” salad using cauliflower instead.

Hope I’ve given you a start, I just don’t cook much but many recipes abound. Adapt what you’ve always eaten first (I bet someone has a recipe for it or low carb version) and then start exploring.

Chia seeds sound so expensive but 1# will make 10# food (when you can splurge some – Amazon.com has couple lbs. for $ 16 shipped to you.

I also order off Amazon – Lowrey’s Pork Rinds 18 for $ 15 – they pop like popcorn and are portion controlled.

Faux tapioca – 2 cups of water, 5 scoops of low carb whey protein powder, stir together & add cup of chia seeds, after they have started to absorb the water, add in 2 cans of coconut milk (or cream and added water during induction) & artificial sweetener if you like and mix it all in. Can be eaten after an hour but will be better tomorrow. Cream a pkg. of cream cheese into a can of pumpkin and add to the faux tapioca for an even more nutritious pumpkin pie pudding.

(berries are lowest glycemic) Cheesecake – strawberry ice cream (frozen berries, cream, a stick blender) – pork rinds great crunch – i eat lots of fish for snack (fish “steaks” or mackerel in tins are favs)- avocado/mayo/cayenne dip – olives

Pumpkin soup
* 1 (12 ounce) package Jimmy Dean sausage
* 1/2 cup onion, minced
* 1 garlic clove, minced
* 1 tablespoon italian seasoning
* 1-2 cup fresh mushrooms, chopped
* 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin
* 4 cups chicken broth
* 1/2 cup heavy cream
* 1/2 cup water

Directions
1.Brown sausage, drain, then add the onion, garlic, Italian seasoning and mushrooms and sauté until done.
2. Add pumpkin to this mixture and mix well.
3.Then stir in the broth and mix well.
4. Simmer 20-30 minutes.
5. Stir in the heavy cream and water and simmer on low another 10-15 minute Taste and add salt& pepper as needed.

Question by mdGreg C: Since the Target of “Probiotics” is the Colon, Could Enemas With a Small Amount of Culture -?
-(Diluted Appropriately) Be Recommended Occasionally?

Would you Expect Any Positive Effect On UC or IBS?
Thanks Swamy, it is Certainly Unpleasant to Think About, but people With the Above Conditions Will Probably Be Willing to Undergo Such Unpleasantness, for Some Relief. I Read One Proposed Mechanism for UC is Hydrogen Sulfide Gas Production:

From Wikipedia:

Alternative theories

Levels of sulfate-reducing bacteria tend to be higher in persons with ulcerative colitis. This could mean that there are higher levels of hydrogen sulfide in the intestine. An alternative theory suggests that the symptoms of the disease may be caused by toxic effects of the hydrogen sulfide on the cells lining the intestine.[16][17] It may be caused by occlusions in the capillaries of the subepithelial linings, degenerated fibers beneath the mucosa and infiltration of the lamina propria with plasma cells.
Swamy, Assuming the Above has a Lot of Merit, Could a Phage Targeting Sulfidogen Bacteria and the Enemas Cited Above, Be Recommended?
Thanks Rob, I Suppose that if There Were a Straightfoward Solution, it Would Have Already Been Discovered, Just Thinking Some Things Might Not Have Been Attempted.
