Question by Sue T: Is it safe to supplement with Calcium Butyrate?
Hi,
I continuously show low amounts of Butyrate on my Compreshensive Digestive System Analysis.
I want to increase my Butyrate levels . . is it safe to take the supplement?
Is there a better way to increase butyrate?
I have taken probiotics but they methylate mercury in my gut and I get lots of neuro and eye problems from them.
Thanks, Sue T

It doesn’t seem to be used particularly commonly.
The best ways to increase butyrate production in the gut are to increase consumption of soluble fiber such as fructooligosaccharide (FOS) and increase intake of resistant starches, which are a component of most vegetables.
The 2nd dietary source , the only direct source in the diet is from butter, which contains 3% butyrate.

Question by Neen: Is it safe to take tablets for Irritable Bowel Syndrome whilst ttc?
Me and my partner are ttc (which I havent mentioned to my GP) but last week I was prescribed Colofac as the dr suspects I have IBS (which I have looked at the symptoms and I don’t think I have). I havent started taking them yet, and today I read that you shouldn’t take take them if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. I am slightly worried so just wondering if anyone is in the same boat as me? Me and my partner are so desperate to conceive and I dont want to take anything that is going to hinder conception or harm the baby if I do conceive.
Any ideas?

I can’t give you a good answer, as i do not know, but if you are trying to concieve then stop taking them, it is my understanding that there is nothing that can be done for IBS at least not in the prescription world.

Question by jkzimm04: Are Probiotics safe during pregnancy?
Hi, I was wondering if it’s safe to take probiotics during pregnancy? I have a bottle of capsules that contain:
L. Rhamnosus
L Casei
L Acidophilus
B Longum
I actually drink acidohpilus milk and did during my first pregnancy and had no issues with it. I did some research online and it looks safe to take to me but when I asked the Dr. they said that they don’t have enough information on if it harms the fetus or not. I know some herbs and things can harm a fetus but sometimes it seems like drs of all kinds just want you to steer away from the “Natural” remedies. Does anyone have any insight?
The dr. advised that I shouldn’t take them

Yes, probiotics are perfectly safe during pregnancy… it’s like eating yogurt.
Unfortunately, many doctors are more negative about supplements and tend to “err on the side of caution”… if they don’t know about it, you shouldn’t take it. However, probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that already live in your intestinal tract, so they only go into your intestinal tract, not in the blood stream where they might cause an issue with pregnancy. Don’t worry about it.
