Question by LC850: Probiotics, Prebiotics?
Do you use any probiotics or prebiotics during the course of powerdosing wormer?
If you use a probiotic or prebiotic, but not for that reason, why do you use it? Has it helped?
I have a couple horses that are known for having stomach ulcers. I do use probiotics on them to aid in their digestion until the ulcers improve, if they ever do. I am wondering if anyone has used the probiotics or prebiotics and they were effective enough to stop and the horses digestive system was back on track?
Lisa,
In my opinion the probiotics have helped these horses with ulcers. We did try the products you listed, but they aren’t good to use for the long term in my opinion. I wanted the balance restored in the digestive tract in order to help with the healing process of the ulcers. The useful active agents restore the gastric and digestive tract with good bateria to prevent the bad from producing the acid with therefore causes the ulcers.
They were scoped by a vet in the area I purchased them. Both horses were in a very stressful racing enviroment. I understand the common thought and logic behind probiotics not being a usual treatment for ulcers. But if something works, you just go with it I say. They haven’t been scoped since their move here, but in the 9 months here the change is enough to make me a believer to go with the natural perspective when you can, if it works. I have the vet coming in 5 weeks for vaccinations and coggins renewal. I will see about having them rescoped and let you know what I find out.

Probiotics only affect the natural flora in the gut and will not heal ulcers. GastroGard is the best product on the market for ulcers but very expensive but there is another product Neigh Lox which can assist with ulcers and it’s cheaper than GastroGard. It’s fed daily. Probiotics will not prevent gastric acid or protect the stomach from it.
I’ve used probiotics for foals that have scours or rotavirus and it does seem to help a little.
