Question by GraceZ: Looking for opinions re: changing cat diet for feline IBS?
Hi -
I am trying to make the right decision for both of my cats and am looking for opinions.
They have been limited to a “natural” cat food, chicken and rice – I started them in the dry form, which they have been used to.
The dietary restriction is due to one of them having food allergies/ Irritable Bowel Syndrome. She can only eat very limited ingredients.
She is under a vet’s care. She had bloody diarrhea last week and was checked on Fri. (The vet is looking at the “bigger guns” of steroids for her, and I think all these meds take a toll, although they help to “quiet” the symptoms. My cat is currently on budesonide, which has helped, but is not always effective.)
We discussed the benefits of the change to higher quality canned, wet food – I’m wondering if anyone has dealt with these food issues, and if you have been able to achieve healing through food changes?
Thank you,
I notice this is a very caring and knowledgeable cat community here-

Thank you, Ken, J C, and Elaine- I’ve been looking into your links, Ken, as well as helpful perspectives, yours, as well, J C, I very much appreciate the personal experience you shared, and I will visit the site you mentioned, Elaine. I just got By Nature organic canned chicken @ the vet, and am beginning the transition. My cat is on a short term round of steriods to address the possible ulcers and she continues to be playful trouble (as I installed new litter boxes, she made use of the floor for her urination needs…sigh, must buy stock in pet enzymes… ) Thank you again, and I will continue to learn about and practice best care possible.

Hi
Rice?????? Please Your cat is a meat eater an obligate carnivore
You have unfortunately probably been feeding dry foods
You need to either switch to canned foods with no grains or as little as possible or a raw diet where there are no grains at all. The raw diet is the best option as you control the ingredients. You would need to purchase a grinder
What you also want to do is cut down on the fats
A human grade quality canned food like Merrick or wellness with chicken breast added would be great.
Diet plays a huge part in most IBD cats, If a no grain diet doesn’t do the trick,
A novel protein like rabbit, vennison ect with no grains,
For a raw diet which is the best choice, you can buy something like nature’s variety or you can make your own
