Question by John Fattyson: Anyone with Irritable Bowel Sydrome. Help?
I went to a doctor recently because I experienced abdominal pains and problems having bowel movements. I was mostly afraid of it being colon cancer but he said that wasn’t the case due to me not having any blood in my stools or them coming out flat and thin. He said I could very well have IBS but he can’t OFFICIALLY diagnose me until the symptoms have occurred for 12 weeks. Since I seem to fit the bill, I’m relatively sure I have this. How do you cope with this condition? How do others with this syndrome live their lives with abdominal pains every day? I have depression as well which tends to make it worse. How would you cope with this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I’ve had it for a long time. It’s fully under control for me now. I rarely have an incident anymore. There are really 2 types. One where you’re constipated another where u have diarreah. Both cause severe gas pains. First thing that I have to be careful of is certain foods. With me it’s the ones higher in fats. Like mayonaise, eggs and real butter for example. I have to be very careful. I can eat tiny amounts but not at all if it’s been a stressful week. Stress makes it much, much worse. So keep track of what foods set you off. This takes a while but is necessary. Try not to stress as a day or 2 later it can make you have an episode. I always kept immodium on me too. First sign, I took one. Keep going to the Dr till he gives you the for sure, but in the meantime watch what you eat and try to keep relaxed as much as possible. Good Luck…

Question by dreamer: I think I have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). help?
I have periods of really bad constipation which causes bloating and gas…
followed by diarrhea (always bad no matter who you are).
then i’ll be ok for a little while.
i’ll have bad cramps in my lower abdomen and lower back. sometimes umm pain in the groin (especially when constipated) and a need to urinate frequently (which causes a slight burning sensation)

ok does that sound like IBS?
i know there is no cure for it but this is severely impacting my life in many negative ways and i need an end to it; plus the pain and discomfort have only become more Intense as of late. i’ve already drastically changed my eating habits and still the symptoms persist.
i desperately need help and would rather not see a doctor (haven’t been in nearly 5 yrs).
i’m a girl in my late teens and other than this i’m in very good physical health.

The symptoms of IBS mimic other conditions like celiacs disease and inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis or crohns disease.
The only way to know if you have these conditions is a stool test, blood test, colonscopy and biopsy (although you wont have all these tests if the blood test and stool test come back negative). If your tests show nothing then it’s likely you have IBS.

Good luck!

Question by ladeedah: I have Irritable bowel syndrome and gastritis , what OTC meds can i use for a headache?
I have IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) and Gastritis and I’ve been getting headaches a lot , is there any pain medications that will get rid of my headache but not harm my stomach so much?

Answer by Sandra
Your headaches may be due to the IBS. I have Ulcerated Colitis and have severe headaches if I don’t eat right. As for over the counter? Not much out there. I take Flexeril, it is prescribed by your physician but is relatively cheap. My headaches are caused by tension in the neck and shoulders which stems from the colitis and manifests in my neck and shoulders. Not sure but this could be your problem. The Flexeril helps to relax those muscles. Good luck.

IBS is, more or less, a chronic illness but as you age, the symptoms get better and for some people, they completely disappear. So don’t lose hope.
As for your diet, i’d recommend taking small meals throughout the day instead of the fixed 3 meals. Drink plenty of water (trust me, it helps). Add more fiber to your diet by eating more vegetables, salads and fruits. You can also try the fiber you get at the stores which you’re supposed to mix in water and drink.

Don’t take too much tension.
Also, if you feel nauseous after eating or feel bloated, try slowly walking around for a bit after the meals.
Avoid pop, spicy food and other such things.
