Question by Duran D: How can I replenish my gut flora?
A heavy round of antibiotics ruined my stomach, so I took probiotics pills. They made me feel great, completely resolved the symptoms!

But now, when I stop taking them, I feel bad again. I read that they are NOT permanent, and don’t live in your gut. So, how can I restore the natural good bacteria which lives in the gut?

Question by tino mar: Do probiotics establish Intestinal Flora permenantly?
I am planning to use probiotics for a month or so in order to establish the bacterial flora in my system. I suspect that the harmful bacteria in my guts would be accumulating in my blood. What I would like to ask is do probiotics establish the intestinal flora permanently after a few months of usage or do they need to be used regularly? Are there cases where the harmful bacteria in the body defeat beneficial bacteria and destroy itself?
I mean after I establish the natural flora would the body destroy the flora itself if there are harmful bacterias which are stronger? Or 1-2 months of probiotic consumption gets rid of everything until an antibiotic is used?

Sugars & other concentrated carbohydrates (which the body converts to sugar) feed harmful bacterias, while lowering the immune system, in part by destroying beneficial bacteria. So, NO, you cannot **permanently* establish a colony of beneficial bacteria no matter what happens. Antibiotics, &, stress also destroy beneficial bacteria. (Antibiotics can also cause antibiotic-resistant bacteria.) http://watchtower.org/e/20031022/article_01.htm

Question by elizabeth: Is it possible to have too much good gut flora?
ie: can you take too many probiotics?

Best answer:

Answer by J’d
Yes!

You want a nice mixture of many bacteria. If you have an overgrowth of any bacteria, no matter how “probiotic” it is a bad thing.

But, the amounts you would have to take to do that would be insane, unless you have an immune problem

Go to your doc!

If probiotic acidophilus is taken, will it recover to normal flora? Do I have to take probiotics for throughout my life or I can stop after taking few days? If so how many days I have to take these probiotics? Any side effects of taking these probiotics?
