Question by Pamela S: Can someone help me find out what is causing stomach problems similar to Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
I have been in and out of the Emergency Room and had 2 stays in the hospital with SEVERE stomach spasms ( not cramping!), loose stool and vomiting. The spasms don’t let up even for a second and the vomiting conitinues even when there is nothing left but bile to dry heave up! I get dehydrated and my white blood cell count goes thru the roof. My lower back begins to hurt on both sides and I go into cold sweats. The ONLY drug that seems to stop the spasms has been Dilaudid after their trying Morphine and Valium. At first they thought I either had a viral or bacterial infection or possibly a gallstone and they were actually about to remove my gallbladder but didn’t. I have had every kind of test possible, including CT scans, sonograms, blood work, colonoscopy and endoscopy. The only thing they say is that is MUST be IBS because they can’t figure what else it could be. Everything I’ve read about IBS says NOTHING about the vomiting and nausea or the severe stomach spasms, so I am not convinced that this is what I have. I have just come home from the hospital and I was prescribed a medicine called Bentyl. This stuff has made me feel even worse and I had the cold sweats ALL NIGHT LONG and couldn’t sleep a wink. Has anyone out there had a similar problem to this and any suggestions as to what to do? I am physically , emotionally and now financially spent and need some relief soon. I appreciate anyone’s feedback and will take it very seriously! Thank you everyone in advance!
Quick update: I spoke with my GI and was told my colonoscopy biopsy results came back negative for everything they tested for, and they removed the polyps from my colon and just said to come back in 3 years to have a checkup. I have continued to research IBS, and have not found anyone who has had the horrible symptom of vomiting violently and having the stomach spasms to the severe degree that I did, so I’m not buying into the IBS thing just yet. One other noteworthy thing I’m curious about is whether or not dental implants (4) could cause this type of problem? I didn’t start getting sick until about 2 months after I had the implants put in my mouth. Coincidence or not, I’m not sure! Please help me if anyone has any advice! Thanks again in advance:-)

Everything that you are describing could be pointing to Celiac disease. It is very under-diagnosed in the U.S., although in Europe they are more knowledgeable about it. Look up celiac disease online, review symptoms and safe food lists. If you do have celiac, you don’t need any medicine! All you need to do is follow a gluten-free diet which is easy once you get the hang of it. Really, look into this. I was horribly ill for many, many years until I heard about celiac disease. The specialists thought I had lupus, IBS, Crohn’s disease. They were all wrong. I educated myself about gluten and went on a strictly gluten-free diet. It changed my life. This may not be your issue, but try it. It can’t hurt.

Question by Steve: How to stop extreme burping besides probiotics or carbon or antacid or “Beano” that I’ll try when I find it?
I have unbelievable amounts of gas burping from me constantly.
I intend to try “Beano” when I find some for sale, but no luck so far, minimal hope of that.
I tried probiotics like acidophilus, yogurts like “Activia” (they stopped gas from the other end, a bigger problem, thank God, worth their money, but they don’t stop the burping!).
I also tried antacids like “Tums” & stuff, didn’t help.
I tried carbon, like ash, didn’t help.
I was in close quarters over a year ago & about 8 of us came down with some strange sickness that caused the same problem after healing… something within our digestive tracts now makes incredible volumes of gas!
Thank you for any help you may offer.

Try eating smaller meals. Sit up straight when eating and remain upright as long as you can after eating. It will help the esophagus to allow the food to go down into the stomach without gas coming back up.

Beano is really for gas but not for burping. The other end. Maybe it will clear out the gas for you though. Good luck. No one likes to keep burping.

Do you have a little tummy? It could be preventing you from allowing food to get down easier.

I was thinking maybe Trader Joe’s have them??? Can anyone confirm?

Yes, Trader Joe’s should have Probiotics. So should Vitamin Shoppe or similar vitamin stores.
