Question by Pueblo Rocks: Feeling shaky for 2+ weeks after working out. Discomfort in left oblique area. History of anxiety & IBS. Help?
Hello,

After doing a set of push ups and/or pull ups (20-30 each set once a day) three times a week, I feel nervous, shaky and anxious for 2+ weeks. Additionally, I have discomfort (not so much ‘pain) in my left oblique area. It feels heavy, even if I don’t eat much, and there is a tingly feeling around that area. Sometimes I’m constipated or have diarrhea during this period. No blood in urine nor stool. As a result, I will stop working out until the feelings go away. I will workout again and the cycle continues.

Admittedly, I haven’t warmed up beforehand because I thought it was, relatively speaking, a small amount of exercise and I usually do them before going to work or before going to sleep. I am warming up now.

I was pescotarian (vegetables, dairy and seafood) for two years until this year when I decided to eat red meat and chicken again. During my pescotarian period, I also ate very little sugar but I had some fruit only a daily basis. Bicycling is my primary mode of transportation. I have a history of anxiety that has improved greatly due to cognitive therapy treatment and spiritual practices. I have a history of irritable bowel syndrome. I had long-term exposure to domestic violence.

I’ve consulted my primary care physician (PCP), a hernia specialist and most recently, a sports medicine physician. I’ve had some CT scans and an MRI of the oblique area and my lower back prescribed by my PCP. The hernia specialist said I did not have a hernia. The sports medicine physician took some X-rays. Nothing found. He wants me to get another CT scan in the lumbar spine area. These tests, even with health insurance, are costly.

What are your thoughts on the situation? I would greatly appreciate your insight.

Thanks,
C

For some people with anxiety, the release of brain chemicals from exercise and the increased heart rate bring on an anxiety attack. This is due to those feelings that others think are “good” feelings become associated in our minds as the same feelings brought on with adrenaline and panic. Panic can also cause abdominal upsets, just as IBS. In fact, it may have been the cause of your IBS. All parts of our body are connected and react to the brain chemicals. Glad to hear that your anxiety has improved with the therapy. You might want to explore the idea that your exercise is over and above the bicycle, because you are used to that exercise and those muscles are more toned and trained, thus not causing as much endorphins to be released. The pain in our back is a separate issue in my opinion, for what it’s worth.

Question by SazzyC: Why is bread giving me abdominal discomfort?
I’ve noticed that whenever I eat bread, pizza or pasta I get mild to moderate discomfort in my lower abdomen. I’ve tried to not eat as much of these foods, but i love them! I don’t think it’s Irritable bowel syndrome, maybe an allergy? it’s just that area specific area that gets sore!

Depends on what type of IBS you have , with constipation or not. If you have IBS with constipation than Zelnorm is a great medication.
