Question by Moth: How do people cope with putting their pet down?
My kitty is 15 and has irritable bowel syndrome and won’t use her litter box. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on this problem and can’t afford the diet or the problems with the mess. She is a happy cat and I can cry for hours at the thought of her going.

During your cat’s life you want your cat to be happy as long as it lives. It’s best to let go of your cat when she’s happy and remember her as a happy cat rather than letting go of her when she’s miserable and sickly. This is the best time and though you maybe sad, you’re lucky to be letting go of her now. To make the uthenization less painful for you and your kitty have a specialist come to your home to put her/him down. This is where your cat is the most happy (after all cats are home based animals) and from experience we all know that cats hate leaving the house to go to the kennel or the vet.
My sympathies are with you, I’ve already had to put down one of my cats. I hope this experience is not too hard on you, and you have to remember that this is the best route for your kitty.

Question by se: What can I do to help myself cope with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)?
I have recently been diagnosed with IBS but have had it for several years without knowing it. I had already followed the instructions of my doctor before finding out it was IBS to keep a food diary and eliminate foods that upset me. I have eliminated white flour, processed foods, milk (I’m allergic to milk protein), white rice, raw vegetables, apples (unless they are cooked and peeled), grapes, refined sugars (white sugar, corn syrup, etc), butter and milk products including yogurt (i’ve tried it…it doesn’t work for me), peanut butter, and I probably need to get rid of chocolate too. I am frustrated though because I still think there may be other things. I live on whole wheat flour, brown rice, potatoes, whole grain breads and pastas, 100% fruit jam, organic condiments, almonds, meat (except with hamburger I boil it and get out all of the fat as possible as that seems to bother me), etc. I am still dealing with pains when I eat sometimes and when I don’t eat soon enough. Also if I overeat its really bad. I get all the symptoms diarrhea, constipation, gas. I also have been really tired all the time and emotionally and physically exhausted. I really would like to know how to help myself besides what I am doing but haven’t found a way yet. I also get headaches, heartburn, backache, anxiety, and down about it. Any suggestions on how to keep the pain down, stop the tiredness, etc? Also, I keep getting these cravings really horribly for sugar and I can’t even have it! What do I do?

My husband has IBS and he takes Metamucil fiber every night, which really helps him a lot.

Question by boo93: how do you cope with IBS? (irritable bowel syndrome)?
i am really in need in some help at the moment. Im 15 years old and i have had IBS for about 2 months now, and its effecting my school life as it only happens at school.

I start with a pain in my stomach (alot like the pain you get when you have an upset tummy) then i start to panic, with my heart beating really fast and not being able to breathe. When this happens, i usually have to run straight into the loos. It’s really hard and embarrassing at school, as the other kids are really nosy and ask why i have to keep walking in and out of the classroom. Also, the teachers arn’t that great, sometimes when i try to get their attention they ignore me. My parents have been to the school and let them know about my condition, and they are supposed to be supplying me with a medical card (so i can get out of lessons quicker) and a key to the disabled toilet, as it is more private.

I think thats why i start to panic, as i am out of my comfort zone at school and i extremely dislike the school toilets, as they are dirty and unprivate. I cannot stand the pain and the panicing anymore, ive tried so hard to calm down, such as trying not to think about it and to do other things. But the more i try not to think about it, the more i do.

For anyone who also has IBS, please share any tips you have on reducing the attacks, it will help so much.

The best thing to help prevent an “attack” is to stay away from fried or spicy food. Becoming paniced is normal because you never know when/if an attack is going to come, or if you will be able to make it to the bathroom in time. Most people do not understand IBS, so don’t get upset when people don’t understand. Sounds like you and your parents are handling the IBS well, so I’d keep that up.

Try eating more fish and taking fish oil pills. These seem to calm down the nerves in the intestinal tract in some people.
