Question by joe: can you please tell me which kind of dog food is best for newfoundland male?
i feed my dog beneful and he has been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. he has frequent diarrhea and belly pain. The vet also suspects he has colitis and I am going to take him to vet for further testing. The vet thinks he is allergic to corn. So i remove pieces of corn with my hand from the beneful packet. I now think beneful may have contributed to his IBS and suspected colitis. If so, then what should I feed him?

Question by MoonStarsandRoses: Best ways, foods, supplements to build *immune system?*?
Hi ! I try to eat well with a balanced diet and I take supplements like vitamins, minerals, probiotics – - about 12 different supplements a day. For instance, I take Vitamin C, 500 mg x 3 a day, B-complex, kelp, Magnesium, Zinc, etc….

My friend has suggested that I add beta glucogan or beta glucocan ( SP ?) to help build/keep immunity?

I looked at this in a health store and it’s kinda expensive.

Is this a good choice ? Is there something better ? I thought vitamin C (ascorbic acid) was the best ?

Thanks.

Save your money and stick with foods. Organic fruits and veggies do a better job at strongly building and maintaining immune health and it’s lighter on the wallet. For ex: I consume a 3000 daily caloric diet, but I always incorporate 10 servings of fruits and raw veggies into this palate. Why? I never get sick. So, it works. It’s also sound judgement to cut out those “foods” that rob nutrients like, for one, refined sugar, and for two, partially hydrogenated veg. oils. This is a no-brainer, literally. Not only is it not good for brain health, but it also places your body in an acidic state, leaving you susceptible to diseases. Everytime my parents turned around, when I was a child, I was always taking Amoxycilin, Tetracycline, some crap for bacterial infections. I had many episodes of viral infections…colds that were innumerible as a kid. I was a sugaraholic. I loved it, and I was wired constantly. It didn’t stop in my teens and 20’s, but after so many years, I couldn’t take anymore of it and did my own research. For a time, I got into the supplements like you, taking every name of supplement I couldn’t even pronounce for lots of money per bottle. They didn’t work as well as whole foods. Whole, raw foods are impecable at what they do for you. They’re not only foods, but they’re nature’s medicine for your body. Believe it or not, a natural food store owner convinced me of this. So, it was no surprise I only shopped at his store for just the topicals and not the supplements. He gave me the nitty gritty on what it was all really about, plus, he’s a biochemist and a professor at a local college, so that helped a bit.
I hope this helped some, if not, at least I placed my input. Good luck to you.

Question by Smylinqt: The Very Best Cat Food?
I’m trying to find the very best cat food for my 4 month old kitten. I had to change his diet due to him having irritable bowel syndrome. I never knew cat food could be so dangerous and just bought commercial food from wal-mart. It wasn’t until this cat that I realized how bad it is. He was having so many problems.

I now give him a bowl of dry food and a half can of wet food. I mix in 1/4tsp of missing link for additional fiber.

I have tried
Before the grain, he seems to only like the salmon flavor.
Evo dry (the purple turkey & chicken) So far this is his favorite dry food
Evo wet: Tried all flavors but only likes the Beef and Duck.
Newmans Own. He didn’t like either flavors I bought.
Chicken Soup For a Kittens Soul. He liked it, but I’m still unsure about this canned cat food.
Holistic canned. Did not like the duck flavor.
Instinct: Rabbit flavor. He did like this.
Serengeti Dry food. I bought it but haven’t opened it yet
and
Taste Of The Rockys (Venison & Salmon). He eats it, but not sure if he really likes it.

Are any of these foods I gave him bad? What ones in your opinion are better than the others?

The reason I ask is because I just got done reading: http://www.homevet.com/petcare/foodbook.html

and it scared me. So I want to make sure I’m feeding my cat the best food. Any suggestions?

You’re doing well, lucky kitten :) I haven’t heard of Serengeti but all of the others (Taste of the Wild maybe?) are really good quality foods. Best foods in my opinion are grain free and don’t have too much fish. Grain-free that I know of are Wellness Core, Felidae (several versions, grain free is best), Taste of the Wild, EVO..

I’m actually reading that book now but I’ve seen a good amount of the information before. It never stops surprising me though..

Question by Gina: What Are The Best Probiotics For Cats?
Lactobacillus Acidophilus seems to be the one I see recommended most often.
Which other ones are best for cats?
My cat just finished a long run of multiple antibiotics.
My veterinarian gave me a product called FortiFlora made by Purina.

First of all, I’m pretty disturbed that my vet would push a product manufactured by a heartless company that has a strong track record of selling very unhealthy pet products.

But, while I’m still tying to figure out why my vet is pushing Purina products, I glance at the product ingredients and find Animal Digest listed as the primary ingredient and below that I find that the product contains only one probiotic organism – Enterococcus Faecium – a bacteria which I had never heard of, and which seems to be fairly well known for its ability to occasionally cause problems.
Yet my vet stressed that I must give this supplement to my cat?
I should probably add that my cat has a bleeding stomach ulcer, in case that has bearing on which types of probiotics I should choose.

Best answer:

Answer by Lo dit
“Lactobacillus acidophilus and other Lactobacillus species, and certain strains of Bacillus, Enterococcus, Bifidobacteria, and Streptococcus”- http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?action=library&act=show&item=probioticsadietarypowerhouseforyourcat

You can try Bene Bac. http://www.jbpet.com/bene-bac-powder,659.html
