Question by Amanda: Does having a bowel obstruction during pregnancy effect the baby?
I’m 12 weeks pregnant and i was born with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) Now that i’m pregnant it’s 5 times worse and i can go a week and a half without going and i feel pain and pressure in my bowels and was concerned if that pressure from my bowels expanding would be pushing on the baby or stressing it. I’m very scared, nothing helps me go (suppositories, enema, prune juice, water, etc..) except laxatives and i’ve learned not to take those anymore. Should i be worried that this is putting effect on my unborn baby? How can i explain this to my doctor on wed. sep 28th, 2011? Please help!
FEEDBACK:
Thank you guys so much! I even apologize to the baby everyday “Mommy’s sorry” sounds crazy, but i do. I feel so bad for the both of us. It’s been two weeks now and i’m worried. No wonder i’ve been so nauseated. Poor little thing just wants nutrition. Doctors appointment today, wish me luck!

IBS can affect your pregnancy by causing preterm labor.
Are you taking regular fiber supplementation? This will help keep you fairly regular. You could try Benefiber tablets, take 3 twice a day. I have IBS and the fiber taken regularly has helped a lot.
Highly recommend you monitor your BMs and report this activity to your OB on the next visit. The doc may recommend softeners and diet modification (more fiber).
Good luck!

Question by Sushibug: Will probiotics help my 20 week old gassy baby? ?
My son has been on Zantac since about 6 weeks for reflux, he is also very gassy and cries alot. He hasn’t slept well since birth, waking in the night from 2-8 times. I was taking fenugreek and Blessed thistle to increase milk supply (I’m nursing) but then he started pooping over 10x a day green and frothy, I stopped the herbs a week ago but he still poops alot although not as much and its still green.
I’m at my wits end, we are getting no sleep and I also have a toddler so sleeping during the day is out. I’m wondering if the proboitics might help? We already give Zantac, gripe water, colic tablets, nothing really sems to help.

green frothy poop, lotsa gas.. total symptoms over horemilk/hindmilk imbalance.
nurse him one one side for like 30 minutes, making sure that the first breast is empty
then offer the second, this happens because of an oversupply of milk.
go to “kellymom” or “LLLI” and look up “oversupply, we are dealing w/ this right now too

Question by NYCchickie007: Do you give your baby probiotics?
I took my son for one of those allergy tests they do at a natural foods store. They picked up a candida (he doesn’t have thrush, rashy bottom or anything) and she thought it had to do with a bacteria in his tummy. They suggested flora baby powder probiotics. Just a powder you keep in the fridge and give a half scoop in morning bottle. I have found since I have given my son this (he is 2 months old) he is much much more fussier, lot’s of gas, spits up clear foamy liquid, and has given up his afternoon nap. Is this normal? Does it mean he isn’t tolerating the probiotics, or is it his body flushing out the bacteria in his tummy? Just seems like he should be getting better not worse.

NO! Babies don’t need ANY vitamins or pro/prebiotics… that individual at the natural foods store was a SALESPERSON not a infant nutrition expert- stop putting that crap in your kids body and start giving him the natural probiotics you make for FREE!

Question by LittleMum: Baby probiotics.. have you used them?
My little girl is 7 weeks old suffers from bad wind pain. It’s more of the lower gas pains which isn’t relieved by burping. I’ve tried eradicating all the common trigger foods from my diet (she’s exclusively breastfed) but nothing has helped. She spends much of most nights grunting and straining in her sleep.
Aside from her discomfort, as her mummy I find it very difficult to sleep through her noises! Even knowing she’s asleep herself doesn’t help.
I’ve heard that probiotics can help but I can’t find much info in regards to infant doses etc. I’m wondering if there’s a special type designed for infants or whether they’d be ok with just a smaller dose of the regular stuff? And if you’ve used it has it worked for your child??
Any info appreciated

Hi,
Yes, I have used baby probiotics for my son and he’s always had very little problems with bowel movements, etc. I believe the brand was Blue Bonnet milk free probiotics and it was a powder. Basically, I would just dab a little to my nipple and let him drink this with his milk. Hope this has helped you, God bless.
