Is it okay to take acidophilus and antibiotics together?

The acidophilus bottle says to not take them within 2 hours of each other.

However, I was just wondering whether or not it’s a good idea to have both in general.

What about foods and such that contain acidophilus and other probiotics (such as yogurt)?

Any insight would be appreciated. =)

Yes. Infact, they should be taken while you’re on antibiotics. This will help prevent you from getting a yeast infection and from having a reasction to the antibiotic that will cause severe diarrhea.

okay let me be quite frank and disgusting right now and tell you that i have had several cases of bacterial vaginosis. I was on antibiotics for about 2 years on and off, i kept getting it. it’s finally gone now! (i think *crosses fingers*) but i have now developed irritable bowel syndrome. this f-in sucks!!! will my body ever recover and reverse the ibs as long as i stay away from antibiotics? please help!

okay well you probirly need to tell your doctor that you have ibs and that you think its cuz of the meds and if he gives you some more and it stil isnt working go to a diffrent doctor

I have been experiencing long term continuous urinary tract infections and I went to my urologist. He couldn’t find a problem, after prescribing me Macrobid 200 mg for 2 weeks and then conducting a cystoscopy. So he’s putting me on a few months of Macrodantin 50 mg. Should I buy some probiotic pills or should I just let the antibiotics do its work? What do you think about eating Activia for a while? I just don’t want any problems after taking antibiotics for a while.

First he should have done a urine culture to make sure the bacteria are susceptible to Macrobid. Alot of these E-coli are resistant. Second, I would start on Activa as antibiotics can also kill off the good bacteria in your colon resulting in diarrhea.

is it normal to feel so lethargic after taking antibiotics? I know how they work and I’m taking probiotics and vitamin C but I’m so very tired and have no appetite.

sometimes when you have a bad infection your body does become wiped out and it takes awhile for you to get your strength back. But…when in doubt and feeling lousy always consult your doctor! The doctor will be able to tell you what is causing your fatigue or might do some tests to make sure the infection is completely gone.

My toddler is on antibiotics. I know that yogurts are good probiotics. But. she doesn’t like yogurt. So, it is ruled out.

What fruit can i give her? What vegetable is best?

I gave her tomato juice mixed with 1.5 teaspoon sugar. Is that a good thing or bad?

Any other food suggestions are also appreciated.

She has been having infection for more than 1 month before doctor decided to put her on antibiotics.

Get her on the powdered probiotics (in the refrigerated section at vitamin shoppes). You can mix the powder with a bit of juice or milk and give to them. Continue even after the course of antibiotics is done.

Any FRESH fruit or veggie should be fine unless there is a known allergy. Apples and oranges are great, as are bananas. My kids love fresh carrots, bell peppers, corn, etc.

I would not give tomato juice with sugar. Tomatoes are a fruit and have a lot of natural sugar-no need for additional sugar.

Hello, I was on Doxyclycline for 3 wks back in July-august.
So throughout the month of Sept. was taking also probiotics [consuming them 3 hrs. after antibiotic so it would be beneficial,ect]
so during that time, and afterwards still took the probiotics,then stopped.
WAS THAT ENOUGH TIME???
Or should I take more probiotics for another 2-3 months??
I KNOW ANTIBIOTICS ARE ROUGH on one’s body, so naturally would like to get things ‘back on track’ in my bod, eating healthy I have been. But haven’t been eating yogurts.

Well mate, that would depend entirely on how you feel your digestion and regularity is behaving …….. do you get bloating, gassiness, fatigue and exhaustion after meals?? if so, this would suggest that you need to continue taking the probiotic …. in general, you only need to take the probiotic supplement for about a month after completing your course of antibiotics to replenish your good bacteria.

You can also increase your beneficial bacteria levels by adding more fibre to your diet (intestinal bacteria consume dietary fibre and metabolize it into acids that inhibit the growth of bad bacteria) also you could eat yoghurt (if you aren’t lactose intolerant that is) ~ preferably made with live, active cultures …… ;0)

If you really need Anti Biotics. Be sure to go on Probiotics right after to restore the good bacteria in your G.I. track.
Anti biotics are used 10 times more than needed by these so called doctors. How do you know that your condition is non fungle related ? Some pill pushing Doctor tell you that ?

My horse is on a very long course of antibiotics. I wormed him and gave him probiotics about a week before the vet prescribed the antibiotics. Should I give him more probios while he’s on the antibiotics, or is it a waste? Will the antibiotics just kill off the probios? Should I wait until he’s finished with the course of antibiotics before I give him more probios, or give it to him during the antibiotic treatment?
I have a friend who had a horse that was deathly ill and thought she would lose her. None of the vets treatment was working. She stopped all meds and told the horse that if it was her time to “go” that would be okay. She decided to try probios as one last ditch attempt and the horse bounced back amazingly fast! She regained the 200 lbs she lost and is being ridden again!
My vet agrees that probios are very beneficial. I know that they are for humans, I’ve worked for two colon therapists over the past 7 years. I tend not to follow the traditional medical establishment most of the time anyway since I know how money oriented it is and I believe the veteranary field is headed in the same direction.

If The Vet Comes Again Ask And Check With Him.

If He Doesn’t Come Then I Would Wait Until He Is Finished With The Antibio’s And Then Give Him the Probio’s.

My 17 month old daughter is on a pretty strong antibiotic for a VERY stubborn double ear infection. We tried the wait and see approach for 2-3 days, but it was not getting any better.
Since she started the antibiotics last night, she has had some diarrhea and loose stool. When I spoke with the nurse this morning, she suggested using some probiotics to help.

My question is, has anyone used these probiotics before? I have heard of them, but have had no experience with it. How do I give it to my daughter and where would I get them?
Is there anything besides yogurt that I could feed her that would help?

Yogurt is probably the best probiotic to use for such a young child, but go to a health food store and speak with them about other options. There are pills and drinks that would work fine too.
