Question by Kira C: Can long term Antibiotic use be a danger to my health?
I have been taking Antibiotics for my severe acne since I was about 14 years old. I am now 21, and still taking them. I was just wondering if this could cause any serious side effects? Could it hinder the effectiveness of my immune system, or hurt my intestinal flora (the good bacteria in your intestines)? If so, can I circumvent the killing of the good flora by taking pre-biotics and pro-biotics? I also have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, could the usage of antibiotics worsen my symptoms? I started out by taking tetracycline, but then my body became immune to it, so I now take Septra, which I have been on for the past couple of years now. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

You should discuss this with your dermatologist. Long term oral antibiotics can increase your chance of developing a resistant bacteria or fungal infection.

You should follow up with your doctor. Severe diarrhea after strong antibiotics can be a sign of C. difficile infection. This needs to be treated by antibiotics.

Question by *MissNic: Can I take Probiotics while taking an Antibiotic?
I am starting an antibiotic for a nasty sinus infection, however, I also have serious troubles with my intestines/bowels.
I am going to take a pro-biotic to help with this… but I was wondering if I should take it at the same time as the antibiotic, or wait until I am finished with the antibiotic?
Or will it not make a difference?

Any input would be greatly appreciated! :)
My teeth are in perfect health, thank you. I’ve never had so much as a cavity in my life.

And I’ve taken pro-biotics before, and had fairly decent results.

I will just wait until I am finished with my antibiotic to take them.

Well the antibiotics will probably kill off the bacteria in the probiotics, so it could end up being a pointless excercise, it won’t do anything bad if that’s what you’re wondering.

Question by goddessinglasses: Has anyone tried antibiotic therapy for IBS? IE Rifaximin or Neomycin?
Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center have found that a nonabsorbable antibiotic – one that stays in the gut – may be an effective long-term treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a disease affecting more than an estimated 20 percent of Americans. The findings, which showed that participants benefited from the antibiotic use even after the course of treatment ended, support previously published research identifying small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) as a possible cause of the disease.

The research was presented at the recent American College of Gastroenterology’s annual meeting in Honolulu, HI.

“This study is important as it is the first to show that the use of targeted antibiotics results in a more significant and long-lasting improvement in IBS symptoms,” said Mark Pimentel, M.D., first author on the study and director of the GI Motility Program at Cedars-Sinai. “These results clearly show that antibiotics offer a new treatment approach – and a new hop
