Question by Chrisily: Can acidophilus and antibiotics be taken together?
Is it okay to take acidophilus and antibiotics together?
The acidophilus bottle says to not take them within 2 hours of each other.
However, I was just wondering whether or not it’s a good idea to have both in general.
What about foods and such that contain acidophilus and other probiotics (such as yogurt)?
Any insight would be appreciated. =)

Yes. Infact, they should be taken while you’re on antibiotics. This will help prevent you from getting a yeast infection and from having a reasction to the antibiotic that will cause severe diarrhea.

Hi there,
I’ve been on a strict non-dairy diet for years (I’m lactose intolerant). Thus, I’ve been told I should be taking probiotics like acidophilus to replenish my good intestinal bacteria. However, every time I take probiotics after going a long time without any, I feel very bad – I develop a foul smell in my nose, my sinuses swell up a bit, and I generally fill “ill” all over. I don’t think this is a coincidence with something else I’m eating, because when I stop taking the probiotics, these symptoms disappear. Maybe it’s the fact that they are “dairy-based” probiotics and I’m lactose intolerant? Not sure. They are so small, there shouldn’t be that much lactose in them. Maybe my body is getting “used” to the new good bacteria? Is this a temporary adaptation phase?
I’d really like to know if this is a known symptom among people who are going on probiotics after a long period without them. It would be really interesting to know.
Thank you very much
