Question by j999: Probiotics recommendation?
I want to buy a probiotic, but since there are so many out there, I’m not sure about which one to get.

I want to know what I should look for when I buy a probiotic? What should I avoid?

Is this one a good choice? (it has milk as one of the ingredients; does that matter?)

What about this one?

Thanks.
Can anyone recommend a specific probiotic?

Also, is GNC a good company for probiotics or do they make low quality probiotics?

It is really hard to know which is the “best” when it comes to probiotics because it is very difficult to test for which ones you may be deficient in (even for the doctors that know how to find out).
Truth be told, any answer given here will just be personal opinion (I can give you my opinion if you’d like). There are many higher quality companies out there that are readily available and well priced… just make sure the company has a good rating with either the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) or USP (U.S. Pharmacopoeia), as those are the main quality assurance organizations (USP is for the U.S., GMP is for the U.S. and worldwide).

All that being said, if you get a good quality probiotic that has 3-6 billion viable organisms from 3-5 different strains. Good luck!

Question by jmwa228: Probiotics vs GFCF Diet?
My 14 month old daughter has Autistic traits. We addressed this with out pediatrician and she referred us to a Sensory Pathway therapy clinic. The Occupational Therapist recommended that we try a Gluten Free Casein Free Diet for a couple of weeks to see if we notice a difference. She also recommended trying a probiotic, Zeolite, and Candida. My question is if Gluten and Casein are the problem, wouldn’t it be better to try to the probiotic first to see if she reacts well to that, since the probiotic helps break down Gluten and Casein so that she can digest them better? I don’t want to go full blown GFCF with her being so young because I feel she still needs all the nutrients from the dairy and wheat.

Try one or the other for a few weeks to see how she does. Going gluten and casein free will not hurt your daughter for only a couple of weeks. There are a lot of autistic kids with failure to thrive who do fine on the diet. Also, I think the OT is probably knowledgeable but you really should take your daughter to a nutritionist. They can help make recommendations on how to proceed with the diets and maintain healthy weight and include important nutrients.

Question by Mikayla: IBS help and treatment?
I wanted to know what can one do to keep Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) under control?

And can IBS affect urination & if so, what ways?

Thanks in advance, I think I may have this.

I have dealt with IBS for a while now. The only thing that I’ve found to really help is to avoid the foods that aggravate the symptoms. For me I had to stop drinking Mt. Dew completely. I limit fast foods, eating too much and very sweet foods. When I have a flair up my doc told me to use Pepito for several days till it calms down. I don’t think it affects urination at all, at least I’ve never noticed it,
It is important for your doc to diagnosis this as the problem because there are many things that can cause symptoms like this. Good luck

Question by Niki: Probiotics for parrots?
My cockatiel just finished up a harsh antibacterial treatment. I’m looking for a safe probiotic I can administer so her gut flora can recover faster.

I found a children’s probiotic on sale at the grocery store called CULTURELLE, so I thought that if it’s safe for kids then it’s probably safe for my bird. It says it contains both pro- and pre-biotics. It contains a strain called Lactobacillus GG. I started looking it up on wiki and it said this helps make lactic acid. Birds don’t have lactic acid, that’s why they can’t digest milk products. So is this safe for a bird?

Are there any probiotic strains that I can use on a bird? Does anyone know of a common healthy gut flora that most birds have?

Thanks for the help! Please feel free to explain all the details of this confusing subject!

I use a product for my birds from the Avian Medicine Chest called Probac, they have a website and also are very good at answering any questions about your bird’s health. This product has the right formulation of probiotics for birds and contains several cultures. Hope this helps.
