Question by LC850: Probiotics, Prebiotics?
Do you use any probiotics or prebiotics during the course of powerdosing wormer?

If you use a probiotic or prebiotic, but not for that reason, why do you use it? Has it helped?

I have a couple horses that are known for having stomach ulcers. I do use probiotics on them to aid in their digestion until the ulcers improve, if they ever do. I am wondering if anyone has used the probiotics or prebiotics and they were effective enough to stop and the horses digestive system was back on track?
Lisa,
In my opinion the probiotics have helped these horses with ulcers. We did try the products you listed, but they aren’t good to use for the long term in my opinion. I wanted the balance restored in the digestive tract in order to help with the healing process of the ulcers. The useful active agents restore the gastric and digestive tract with good bateria to prevent the bad from producing the acid with therefore causes the ulcers.
They were scoped by a vet in the area I purchased them. Both horses were in a very stressful racing enviroment. I understand the common thought and logic behind probiotics not being a usual treatment for ulcers. But if something works, you just go with it I say. They haven’t been scoped since their move here, but in the 9 months here the change is enough to make me a believer to go with the natural perspective when you can, if it works. I have the vet coming in 5 weeks for vaccinations and coggins renewal. I will see about having them rescoped and let you know what I find out.

Probiotics only affect the natural flora in the gut and will not heal ulcers. GastroGard is the best product on the market for ulcers but very expensive but there is another product Neigh Lox which can assist with ulcers and it’s cheaper than GastroGard. It’s fed daily. Probiotics will not prevent gastric acid or protect the stomach from it.
I’ve used probiotics for foals that have scours or rotavirus and it does seem to help a little.

Question by jumpinjack: Is Probiotics only needed for the intestinal tracks or does stomach need probiotics too?
I am trying to decide if I want to buy probiotics from the market in the cap. format or just stick with good old yogurt… Some Probitotic Manufacturers claim their product does not get effected by stomach acids and gets to the intestine and then gets decomposed and used up and that’s suppose to be better… and others seem to just start from stomach and then go to intestine…. now I am wondering, if I were to buy the ones that stay unaffected until they get to the intestine, wouldn’t that only supply the intestine with Probiotics and not the stomach??? doesn’t the stomach also need probiotics??

yep, there are some bacteria that aid the stomach in digestion etc, but many many more bacteria reside in the rest of the intestines.

the reason people use probiotic capsules, especially enteric coated capsules, like you mentioned, is that they pass through the acidic environment of the stomach and dissolve in the lower intestines where more of the bacteria will survive and do its “work”.

this is especially good for people doing antibiotocs, or with an infection, or weakened immune system. probiotic bacteria in the gut do a lot of good stuff for our body and overall health!

if you feel you need a probiotic boost for better immune function then the capsules might be a good temporary supplement. get the refrigerated kind, they have a lot more live bacteria than the kinds that sit at room temperature.

if you’re looking to improve your digestion then you might want to llok into something like betaine/hydrochloric acid supplements, which increase the acidity in your stomach (some peoples’ stomachs don’t make enough stomach acid to digest foods properly).

then there are other foods you can incorporate into your diet to keep the goodness going strong…

- raw pickled vegetables (getting very popular now in the health food stores refireigerated section) – these are actually called lacto-fermented vegetables because of the lactic acid bacteria which gives them that “zing”. delicious!!!

-miso

-yogurt

as long as these foods are not heated above 118F then their benefits are in full force.

hope that helps !

You can change your toothbrush, brush your tongue daily. If it is a sour stomach or stomach problem you may want to take a laxative to purge the waste and try not to eat and drink at same time which can give you a sour stomach. Drink 30 minutes after a meal.
