Probiotics are harmless commensals. There aren't any safety risks. You could guzzle liters of them and nothing would happen.

However, they are being used for things the evidence does not support. They are great for repopulating your intestine after inflammation or antibiotics, but other than that the evidence is weak.

They are quickly becoming a panacea in alt. med. communities and are advertised as being able to cure just about anything including the ever mythical yeast overgrowth.

Probiotics sold are either one bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus) or a combination of several (L. acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum and Bifidobacterium lactis) in capsule form. You are correct, these bacteria are naturally occurring, but in the intestines. They facilitate proper digestion and absorption of nutrients and prevent the buildup of acids or mycotoxins by Candida Albicans (a yeast organism), also naturally occurring in the body.

Usually a probiotic is used during the course of antibiotics. As the name implies, antibiotics kill organisms that have invaded your body and made you ill. The adverse side effect of this is that it does not discriminate between the "good" and the "bad" microorganisms in your body and create an imbalance in your digestive system. Probiotics have also been used to treat oral thrush and vaginal yeast infections, both caused by an overgrowth of the Candida Albicans yeast.

The organisms found in probiotic capsules are found in a variety of dairy products such as cultured yogurt and raw milk, but it is more convenient to take the capsules.

If you are healthy and want to maintain good digestive health taking lower doses of a probiotic is not harmful. As with any treatment or medicine, prudence is good and more is not better.

Please refer to the studies below from PubMed which is an international clearing house for medical studies on a variety of topics. There are many studies there regarding the use of probiotics to help with your question.

Take care.
