Question by Janet M: What’s the best brand of probiotics (best for helping with IBS)? Or are all probiotics created equal?
I’m currently taking Accuflora brand but haven’t had major results from them so I’m thinking of trying Dr. Ohhira’s probiotics, they’re pretty pricey though and I don’t want to waste my money if they’re not the best. Is there a better brand of probiotics or are all of them pretty much the same?

Truth be told, any answer given here will just be personal opinion (I can give you my opinion if you’d like). There are many higher quality companies out there that are readily available and well priced… just make sure the company has a good rating with either the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) or USP (U.S. Pharmacopoeia), as those are the main quality assurance organizations (USP is for the U.S., GMP is for the U.S. and worldwide).
With Probiotics specifically, I’ve noticed that there are a lot of misunderstandings out there as far as what they are supposed to do. Probiotics aren’t the same things as laxatives, but they do help to promote regularity… they are basically the beneficial bacteria that live in the intestinal tract and help the absorption of nutrients in the intestinal tract. Many people use them for better regularity and better absorption of the nutrients, but they also help to keep some bad bacteria at bay (eg. recurring infections that are common after antibiotic regimens).
Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics are definitely expensive and there are other options on the market that are cheaper (some have more quantity and more variety of strains as well), but as long as you get a good quality product, the price doesn’t matter as much as some people think. Good luck and I hope I helped!

70% of your immune system lies in your intestinal tract. Therefore, you do need to promote the growth of good bacteria!
See if you can purchase plain low-fat Kefer (yogurt’s cousin). It’s a liquid. It contains more good bacteria strains/species than yogurt. It’s at the Kroger Grocery Store.
Stay away from sugar because it aggravates your problems. Also refined carbs (white rice/bread/pasta).
Visit the site drlam.com to research IBS. Good luck!

Right from your health food store, in the refrigerated section: Primadophilus (enteric coated).
Enteric coated types help insure that the acidophilus makes it to your intestines and doesn’t get destroyed by the stomach acids. Brands types that are not enteric coated are of limited value.
Last time I purchased the Primadophilus it was around $21.00 Keep it refrigerated. That is another reason to purchase from your local health food. If you purchase via mail order, it will not have been refrigerated and heat also kills the acidophilus.
I have seen some “shelf stable” enteric coated perles and those seemed to be pretty good, but that was after my son had already saw major benefit from the IBS plan I had put him on. ( He no longer has IBS and a lady at work who I told about these particular probiotics – and a particular digestive enzyme – is also doing MUCH better)
