My 18 month old daughter has an ear infection (likely caused by a milk intolerance) and we’ve been advised to treat her with antibiotics, homeopathics and arabinogalactans. We’ve asked if this is safe to take together and our naturopath says yes. However, we’re just looking for a little support on this from knowledgeable people. PS We’re also using probiotics which we have no problem with. Thanks!

  1. Mike N says:

Most antibiotics are cleared by the liver and/or kidney. When the systemic level of the drug is higher than what the body can handle then toxicity can occur. Drug toxic level can occur either by too high of a dosage for the body mass or when the drug cannot be cleared effectively.
Unfortunately, not all homeopathic medication is safe. For example, too much Vitamin A can increase your risk of lung cancer, especially when you smoke. Too much Vitamin E can increase your risk heart attack.
Some homeopathic drugs can interfere with how the antibiotic can be cleared by overloading enzymes in the liver. This can slow down the rate of clearing of the antibiotic and result in a potential toxic systemic level. It is difficult to give specific answer when the name of antibiotic is not known and the homeopathic drug is not specified.
Fortunately, most homeopathic medication when taking correctly do not interact with conventional medication.

Not a problem. Homeopathics are nothing but water. You would typically take antibiotics with water anyway.
